Porto Rico Importing Co.

I once received as a gift a sign bearing the picture of a smiling 1960’s housewife holding a cup of coffee which read “Coffee: You Can Sleep When You’re Dead.” I loved this sign. I thought it was so cute and so true! I would never skip a good time because I was tired or needed to get up early, I would just “rally” and drink a few cups of coffee to get through the day. Then I had two children within two years and wanted to punch my formerly smug self in the face. I have never been so tired in my life, and a great cup of coffee first thing in the morning has never been more essential than it is now. Luckily, Porto Rico Importing Co. not only let’s you buy in bulk, it encourages it. The rich smell of roasted coffee beans that greets you when you walk in the door is enough to give you a boost. You then wander among these enormous sacks of coffee beans and tell the person at the counter how much you want of each type of coffee.

In a demonstration of their true expertise, the counterperson will ask if you want the beans ground? For a filter? What kind of filter…paper or mesh? And they aren’t wrong. You will bring this stuff home, brew a pot in the morning, and nearly forget that you woke up three times in the night with your newborn. Oh, and if you need something to drink at that very moment, you can buy a cup of already-brewed coffee from the lady behind the counter in the back. They also have tea, but that stuff is for people who sleep more than three hours in a row at any given time.
